The cousin of 10-year-old Lily Peters, who was killed in Wisconsin in 2022, has pleaded guilty to first-degree intentional homicide and been sentenced to life in prison.
Lily was riding her bicycle home from her aunt’s house in Chippewa Falls on April 24, 2022, when her cousin, Carson Peters-Berger, persuaded her to leave the trail and enter nearby woods with him, according to court documents.
Lily’s body was found the following day. An autopsy showed that she had been beaten, strangled and sexually assaulted.
Peters-Berger, now 18, was 14 when the killing occurred. He was arrested a day after Lily’s body was discovered.
Chippewa County Judge Steven Gibbs accepted his guilty plea on Wednesday and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Under a plea agreement, two additional sexual-assault charges were dismissed.
Peters-Berger’s lawyers had previously sought to have the case transferred to juvenile court, arguing that he needed mental-health treatment that would not be adequately provided in the adult criminal justice system. The judge rejected the request, citing the seriousness of the offenses, and a state appeals court later upheld the decision to keep the case in adult court.
The case has drawn significant attention in Wisconsin because Peters-Berger was only 14 years old when Lily was killed.
