Colombia is facing an estimated $9.6 billion in economic losses following a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the country last week.
President Abelardo De La Espriella said the preliminary assessment puts damage to buildings at about 24.5 trillion pesos, while infrastructure losses are estimated at 5.5 trillion pesos.
The earthquake struck several areas of western Colombia, including Cali and Pereira, killing 280 people and injuring more than 4,000 others. Another 143 people remain missing.
Authorities warned that the financial impact could rise as damage assessments continue across the affected regions.
The disaster has become the first major challenge for President De La Espriella, who assumed office only days before the earthquake and is now leading the country’s relief and reconstruction efforts.
