At least 68 people have been killed and more than 200 injured after a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Saturday, according to the country’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).
Rescue teams are continuing to search collapsed buildings for survivors, while thousands of residents have been evacuated and are sheltering in tents or outdoors because of fears of further aftershocks.
East Nusa Tenggara province has experienced nearly 1,600 aftershocks since the main earthquake, including a magnitude 5.6 tremor reported on Monday morning.
The earthquake also triggered landslides and blocked roads in several areas, including Sikka and Manggarai districts, making it difficult for emergency teams to reach affected communities.
Authorities have prepared aircraft to deliver essential supplies, including food and tents. Around 500 homes have reportedly been damaged.
The disaster has also disrupted Indonesia’s Independence Day celebrations as communities struggle to recover from the devastating earthquake.
