Syrian authorities have launched an investigation into the death of Mohammed Gamira, a former White Helmet rescue worker who died after being detained at a police station in Latakia province.
Gamira, a father of two, was reportedly held for three days following a financial dispute. His family alleges that security officers ignored warnings about his chronic haemophilia and subjected him to severe physical abuse during his detention.
According to reports, Gamira later suffered a brain haemorrhage and severe internal bleeding before being transferred to Tishreen University Hospital, where he died.
The case has sparked public outrage, with protests reportedly planned in Latakia. The incident has also revived concerns about mistreatment in detention in Syria, where allegations of torture were widespread under former President Bashar al-Assad.
Syria’s Interior Ministry said the investigation would examine the circumstances surrounding Gamira’s detention and determine whether officers followed legal procedures. Interior Minister Anas Khattab expressed condolences to the family and said anyone found responsible for misconduct would face punishment under the law.
The investigation comes as Syria’s new authorities face continued pressure to strengthen the rule of law and prevent abuses in detention facilities.
