Cambridge Professor Jason Arday Resigns Amid Fresh Investigation Into Qualifications

Jason Arday has resigned as Professor of Sociology at the University of Cambridge following the launch of a fresh investigation into his academic qualifications and career credentials.

Arday, who made history in 2023 as the youngest Black professor ever appointed at Cambridge, announced on Wednesday that he was stepping down with immediate effect from both his university position and his fellowship at Jesus College.

In a statement, Arday said months of intense public scrutiny, allegations, and speculation had taken a heavy toll on him and his family, prompting his decision to leave.

The resignation comes shortly after the University of Cambridge confirmed it had received new information regarding Arday's qualifications and honorary appointments, leading to a separate investigation alongside an ongoing academic misconduct review.

Recent media reports have accused Arday of plagiarising parts of his doctoral thesis and other academic work. However, Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded his PhD in 2015, previously investigated the claims and concluded there was no evidence of deliberate plagiarism, attributing the issues to "honest and reasonable error." Arday has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Cambridge had earlier defended Arday, describing the allegations as part of a campaign to damage his reputation. Nevertheless, the university has now opened a new inquiry, while Jesus College has also launched its own investigation.

Some of Arday's public claims about his personal achievements, including fundraising and marathon records, have also come under scrutiny. He recently acknowledged making academic "mistakes" but rejected accusations that he had committed fraud, arguing that the campaign against him was racially motivated.

Arday said he is stepping away to focus on his wellbeing but expressed confidence that he will eventually return to academic life. His resignation also casts uncertainty over the planned release of his forthcoming memoir, Great and Unfortunate Things, scheduled for publication later this month.
