A senior official on US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace has criticised Israel’s continuing air strikes on Gaza while also condemning actions by Hamas.
Nickolay Mladenov, the Board of Peace’s high representative for Gaza, warned the UN Security Council that the collapse of the ceasefire could become a “point of no return” for the region.
His comments came after Israel rejected a 15-point roadmap proposed by the Board of Peace for Hamas’s disarmament. Under the plan, Hamas would surrender its weapons in exchange for a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. Israel, however, insists that Hamas must completely disarm before any withdrawal takes place.
According to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, at least 1,303 Palestinians, including 300 children, have been killed in Israeli attacks since the US-brokered ceasefire began. The Israeli military says four of its soldiers have been killed in Palestinian attacks during the same period.
Mladenov said continued Israeli strikes were undermining the ceasefire, particularly when Palestinian civilians were killed. He also criticised Hamas for failing to completely stop military activities, including maintaining weapons and tunnels.
He said the roadmap provides for Israeli troop withdrawals to follow the verified decommissioning of Hamas weapons, describing the process as “sequenced and reciprocal.”
Israel’s representative at the UN Security Council maintained that Hamas must first give up its weapons, tunnels and military infrastructure, saying: “Disarmament must come first.”
The Palestinian representative accused Israel of killing civilians in Gaza and called for immediate international protection.
Mladenov warned that if the ceasefire collapses, there may be no roadmap, administration or infrastructure left to rebuild Gaza.
The conflict began after the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, which killed about 1,200 people and saw 251 others taken hostage. Israel subsequently launched a military campaign in Gaza, where more than 73,430 people have been killed, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
