Former Nigerian Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns after an unknown individual transferred money into one of his private bank accounts without his knowledge or approval.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the payment carried the description "Contribution Electioneering Campaign", despite the fact that neither he nor his campaign had requested or authorised any such donation.
According to the statement, the account involved is a strictly private account whose details are not publicly available, prompting questions about how unknown persons obtained the confidential banking information.
Atiku warned that if the private banking details of a former vice president and leading presidential candidate could be accessed, then the financial privacy of ordinary Nigerians could also be at risk. He expressed concern that the information may have been obtained through individuals with privileged access to confidential records.
The former vice president further cautioned that any breach of banking confidentiality could expose account holders to criminals, including kidnappers, terrorists, bandits and fraudsters.
He said security agencies had been informed of the incident, describing it as one of several suspicious developments occurring ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections.
Atiku also urged Nigerians not to be distracted by what he described as attempts to tarnish his reputation, insisting that he remains committed to providing credible leadership and practical solutions to the country's challenges.
