Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has responded sharply to President Bola Tinubu after the president criticised his proposal to restore fuel subsidies if elected in 2027.
Speaking while hosting Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on Thursday, Tinubu described Atiku’s promise to restore fuel subsidies as evidence of “serious ignorance” about governance and the economy.
Atiku, through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, accused Tinubu of worsening Nigeria’s economic situation and said the president was in no position to lecture others on economic management.
Shaibu argued that the Tinubu administration had triggered simultaneous fuel-price, exchange-rate and cost-of-living pressures, leaving millions of Nigerians poorer.
He said Atiku’s proposal was not a return to the previous open-ended subsidy system but a targeted, capped, budgeted, time-bound and independently audited production-support mechanism linked to domestic production.
According to Atiku, economic policies must change when prevailing conditions change. He accused Tinubu’s government of removing the benefits of fuel subsidies while allegedly retaining significant petroleum-sector under-recoveries and energy-security costs.
Atiku also criticised the argument that subsidy removal has strengthened federal allocations to states through the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).
He said governments should not improve their finances at the expense of ordinary Nigerians, who are struggling with high transport costs, rising food prices, reduced purchasing power and worsening poverty.
Atiku maintained that his proposal was designed to address the consequences of the current economic situation, rather than revive the corruption associated with the former subsidy regime.
