The United Kingdom, Australia and Canada have condemned Israel’s decision to end a criminal investigation into the deadly 2024 strike on a World Central Kitchen aid convoy in Gaza.
In a joint statement issued on Friday, the three countries described the decision as “shameful” and urged Israel to comply with international humanitarian law. They said they had spent more than two years calling for those responsible for the attack to be held accountable.
Seven World Central Kitchen workers were killed in the April 2024 strike. The victims included three British nationals, a dual US-Canadian citizen, a Polish national, an Australian and a Palestinian.
Poland also expressed disappointment over Israel’s decision and summoned the Israeli ambassador in Warsaw. Australia had similarly summoned Israel’s ambassador in Canberra.
The Israeli military previously described the attack as a “tragic mistake.” However, on August 19, it announced that it would not conduct further investigations into the deaths of the aid workers.
World Central Kitchen, founded by celebrity chef José Andrés, rejected the decision and called for an independent investigation, arguing that the Israeli military could not credibly investigate its own conduct.
British Minister for the Middle East Stephen Doughty said the UK would continue pressing Israel for urgent answers.
The UK, Australia and Canada also criticised the timing of Israel’s announcement, noting that it came on World Humanitarian Day, when the international community was honouring humanitarian workers and their sacrifices.
