3 African Countries That Have Never Taken an IMF Loan

While many African countries have sought financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at different times, three countries stand out for never having received financial assistance from the institution.

1. Botswana

Botswana joined the IMF in 1968. Although it is an IMF member, the country has never received financial assistance from the Fund. Its relationship with the IMF has mainly involved economic consultations, monitoring and policy assessments.

2. Libya

Libya became an IMF member in 1958. The country has also never received an IMF-supported loan, although it remains a member and participates in the institution’s economic monitoring activities.

3. Eritrea
