At least 17 migrants are believed to have died after attempting the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean Sea to Spain's Balearic Islands, according to Spanish authorities.
Officials said two survivors, both from North African countries, were rescued from a small boat about 13 nautical miles southwest of Mallorca after spending approximately 15 days at sea. The survivors, who were suffering from severe dehydration and malnutrition, told rescuers that 19 people had originally been on board, suggesting that 17 passengers died during the voyage. Authorities said the deaths could not yet be independently confirmed.
Spanish emergency services launched a helicopter search and alerted nearby vessels to look for any additional survivors or evidence related to the incident.
In a separate rescue operation later the same day, authorities intercepted another migrant boat near Mallorca, rescuing 17 people alive while recovering the bodies of two others. Search efforts continued for several passengers who were still missing.
The route from Algeria to Spain's Balearic Islands has become one of the fastest-growing migration corridors into the European Union, despite an overall decline in migrant arrivals to Spain this year. European border officials say human smuggling networks have increasingly shifted operations toward Algeria, using faster boats to transport migrants across the Mediterranean.
Spanish authorities have stepped up cooperation with Algeria in an effort to curb irregular migration and dismantle smuggling networks.
