The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has called on the international community to increase humanitarian assistance to Sudan, warning that millions of people remain in urgent need as the country's conflict continues to deepen.
Speaking in Geneva after returning from Sudan, IFRC Special Envoy Derk Segaar described the crisis as one of the world's largest but least-funded humanitarian emergencies. He stressed that declining international support could undermine efforts to help communities recover after more than 1,200 days of war.
The conflict, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has claimed at least 59,000 lives, according to conflict monitors, although aid organizations believe the actual death toll is significantly higher.
The IFRC said around 35 million people now require humanitarian assistance, while more than 9 million have been displaced within Sudan and about 4.5 million have fled to neighboring countries. Many communities continue to face severe shortages of electricity, clean water, healthcare, and food, with cholera outbreaks, malnutrition, and flooding worsening conditions.
Meanwhile, Sudanese Army Lieutenant-General Yasser al-Atta said the military is continuing operations against the RSF on multiple fronts, expressing confidence that the armed group could be defeated before the end of the year. Fighting remains intense across the Kordofan region despite recent military advances.
On the diplomatic front, the United Nations, alongside the African Union (AU), Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), European Union (EU), and the League of Arab States, is working with Sudanese political leaders to revive stalled peace efforts. UN officials are also holding talks with RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo in an effort to reduce tensions and advance the political process.
