Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed the country's Commander-in-Chief, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, following days of nationwide protests demanding changes in the military leadership.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Zelenskyy announced that General Mykhailo Drapatyi will take over as the new Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces. He thanked Syrskyi for his service and praised Ukrainian troops for their efforts on the battlefield.
The leadership shake-up comes after widespread demonstrations erupted across Kyiv and several other cities following the dismissal of former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. Thousands of protesters called for Syrskyi's removal and demanded Fedorov's return, accusing the military leadership of resisting reforms.
Fedorov had reportedly clashed with Syrskyi over the direction of Ukraine's war strategy and efforts to modernize the military. He accused the former army chief of blocking key reforms, including the expanded use of drone technology.
Initially backing Syrskyi, Zelenskyy later reversed course after consulting senior military officials and facing growing public pressure.
General Syrskyi, 60, played a key role in Ukraine's defence against Russia, leading operations that helped protect Kyiv in 2022 and later directing Ukraine's military campaign in Russia's Kursk region. Despite those successes, he faced criticism from some military personnel and reform advocates over battlefield tactics and troop casualties.
Reacting to the appointment of Drapatyi, former Defence Minister Fedorov described the decision as "a fresh hope" for Ukraine, expressing confidence that the new military leadership would strengthen the country's fight against Russia.
The appointment marks one of the most significant military leadership changes in Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.
