French firefighters are battling to contain massive wildfires advancing toward the city of Bordeaux, as authorities continue evacuating residents from affected areas in southwestern France.
The fires, fueled by an intense summer heatwave, are burning about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Bordeaux's main urban area. Officials say the situation remains difficult despite ongoing firefighting efforts.
More than 220,000 people have been evacuated since the wildfires erupted earlier this week, with the flames reaching Cap Ferret, a popular Atlantic coast holiday destination. Emergency shelters have been opened to accommodate displaced residents.
Local farmers have joined firefighters in efforts to slow the spread of the flames, while officials warn that high temperatures and dry conditions continue to hamper containment operations.
The Aquitaine region has experienced average temperatures of 32.2°C (90°F) this July, significantly above historical averages, contributing to the rapid spread of the fires.
The wildfire crisis comes as several parts of Europe battle extreme heat and destructive blazes. Neighboring Spain has also declared a national emergency over wildfires, with one fatality reported near Valencia.
French authorities have urged residents in affected communities to follow evacuation orders as emergency services work to bring the fires under control.
