Iran has warned that a reported Ukrainian attack on one of its commercial vessels in the Caspian Sea "cannot go unanswered," according to Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.
Iranian authorities said the attack caused an explosion aboard the vessel, killing one sailor and injuring another.
Araqchi made the statement after separate telephone conversations with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. He later shared details of the discussions on social media.
In a statement, Russia's Foreign Ministry said Lavrov expressed condolences over the death of the Iranian sailor. Araqchi also thanked officials in Russia's Astrakhan region, where the ship began its voyage, for assisting the crew following the incident.
According to the Russian statement, Araqchi emphasized the need to prevent similar attacks in the future while also discussing ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East.
The incident has further heightened tensions involving Iran, Ukraine, and Russia, though no additional details about the alleged attack have been released.
