The official death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 5,069, authorities confirmed, more than three weeks after the disaster devastated the country's northern coastal region.
The powerful 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes, which occurred within a minute of each other, caused widespread destruction in La Guaira State, north of the capital, Caracas.
According to National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez, the majority of the victims were from the coastal communities hardest hit by the quakes. The number of injured remains at 16,740, with many victims already discharged from hospitals.
Meanwhile, Interim President Delcy Rodríguez announced that Venezuela has secured $346 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to support reconstruction and humanitarian efforts.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva confirmed that the funds were released from Venezuela's reserve tranche to address urgent humanitarian needs.
Despite the financial assistance, around 20,000 people remain displaced and are living in temporary camps, many of which face shortages of clean water and proper sanitation.
The IMF and the World Bank resumed engagement with Venezuela earlier this year after years of suspended relations, allowing the country access to international financial resources for disaster recovery.
