The death toll from a devastating school bus crash in eastern Uganda has climbed to 24 after three more schoolchildren died from injuries sustained in the accident, police confirmed on Saturday.
The victims include 23 children and one adult following the crash involving a bus carrying pupils and teachers from King David Junior School in Kampala.
The group was returning from an educational trip to Sipi Falls on Thursday evening when the driver reportedly lost control of the bus at Chekwatit Village in Kapchorwa District. The vehicle overturned and slammed into a large rock.
Authorities said six of the deceased children have yet to be identified, while the adult victim is believed to be the school's founder and head teacher.
More than 20 injured children remain hospitalized at Kapchorwa General Hospital, receiving treatment. Three other buses travelling with the same school group completed the journey safely.
In response to the tragedy, Uganda's Ministry of Education and Sports has suspended all school excursions nationwide pending a full investigation into recent crashes involving students.
Police also announced that security escorts will be provided to ensure the safe transportation of learners returning to their schools.
Uganda continues to face serious road safety challenges, with many accidents linked to speeding, poor road conditions, and poorly maintained vehicles. The latest tragedy comes just weeks after another deadly bus crash claimed 14 lives in northern Uganda.
