The United States is expected to announce a landmark civilian nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, according to multiple media reports.
The agreement, expected to be formally signed by the Trump administration and Saudi officials, would allow the kingdom to develop a civilian nuclear energy program with support from American companies. The deal is projected to generate billions of dollars for the U.S. nuclear industry.
Reports indicate the 30-year agreement includes a provision allowing U.S. companies to build a uranium enrichment facility in Saudi Arabia if a joint feasibility study concludes that such a project is necessary.
However, the proposed deal has drawn criticism from some U.S. lawmakers from both political parties, as well as Israeli officials, who fear the technology could eventually be used to develop nuclear weapons despite its civilian purpose.
The agreement is expected to be submitted to the U.S. Congress in the coming days, although congressional approval is not required for it to take effect.
The announcement comes amid renewed tensions in the Middle East. Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have threatened to blockade Saudi ports following recent clashes involving the United States and Iran. Saudi Arabia and the Houthis also exchanged attacks last week, raising concerns that the fragile 2022 ceasefire could collapse.
U.S. officials say the agreement is intended to strengthen energy cooperation with Saudi Arabia while expanding opportunities for the American nuclear industry.
