Burkina Faso's military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore, has reaffirmed that he remains the country's sole leader, warning that he will swiftly remove anyone who attempts to challenge his authority.
Speaking to community leaders in Ouahigouya, northern Burkina Faso, Traore dismissed speculation of a power struggle within the ruling military government, saying there cannot be "two captains on one ship."
He warned that any official who failed to follow his leadership would face immediate consequences, stressing that there are no untouchable figures within his administration.
The rumours stem from the prolonged absence of two senior junta officials—Oumarou Yabre, who heads the country's intelligence services, and Farouk Azaria Sorgho, commander of the Rapid Intervention Battalion and a key spokesman for the military government.
Yabre has not been seen publicly since late May, while reports suggest some of his close associates have been arrested or detained. Sorgho has also disappeared from public view since mid-May, with security sources alleging he may have been detained by allies of Traore, although the government has not confirmed the claims.
In recent weeks, authorities have tightened security in the capital, Ouagadougou, reopening some roads to redirect traffic away from the presidential palace while increasing security checkpoints.
The developments have intensified speculation about possible divisions within Burkina Faso's military leadership, though Traore insists he remains firmly in control of the government.
