Concerns over a wider conflict in the Middle East are growing after the United States intensified military strikes across Iran, targeting military facilities and, according to Iranian authorities, some civilian infrastructure.
The latest wave of attacks marks the heaviest bombardment since Washington and Tehran reached a memorandum of understanding last month. US forces reportedly struck hundreds of military targets across at least 10 Iranian provinces, with many of the operations focused near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian officials said the strikes damaged ports, transport links, power infrastructure and airport facilities, while casualties were reported among military personnel and civilians. The US military said its operations were aimed at degrading Iran's military capabilities and did not acknowledge targeting civilian sites.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that the Strait of Hormuz should once again be considered closed due to ongoing US military actions. Iran also claimed it launched retaliatory attacks against US interests in Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Qatar and Oman.
Residents in Tehran expressed growing anxiety over the renewed escalation, fearing the conflict could develop into another full-scale war despite the capital remaining largely untouched in recent days.
Iranian authorities also reported significant damage to the country's electricity infrastructure, saying thousands of megawatts of power generation capacity have been lost, worsening the nation's ongoing energy crisis during the peak summer season.
Meanwhile, regional tensions remain high as Israel continues military operations in southern Lebanon while warning it is prepared to resume strikes inside Iran if necessary.
The latest developments have further dimmed hopes for renewed diplomatic talks, raising concerns that the conflict could expand across the wider Middle East.
