The United States House of Representatives has narrowly passed a $1.15 trillion defense spending bill that increases military funding and expands defense technology cooperation with Israel, despite strong opposition from Democrats and a small group of Republicans.
The legislation, known as the 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), was approved by a 216-212 vote, with six Democrats joining Republicans in support while seven Republicans voted against it.
The bill reflects President Donald Trump's request for a major increase in defense spending, citing the ongoing conflict with Iran and broader national security priorities. It also includes provisions aimed at strengthening military technology and supply chain cooperation between the United States and Israel.
Critics argue that the measure is too costly and raises concerns about closer military integration with Israel. Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, who opposed the bill, urged the Senate to reject it, describing one of its provisions as a threat to U.S. sovereignty.
The legislation now moves to the Senate, where its future remains uncertain. Senate Democrats have previously opposed advancing the bill, arguing that it authorizes excessive military spending while the administration seeks cuts to domestic social programs.
In addition to defense funding, the package includes aid for Ukraine and the SAVE America Act, a voting measure backed by President Trump that would introduce stricter voter registration requirements. Democrats have criticized the proposal, saying it could make voting more difficult for eligible Americans.
