Five Thai paramilitary soldiers were killed and six civilians injured after gunmen launched a deadly attack on a security checkpoint in Thailand's southern Narathiwat province.
According to the Thai army, the attackers opened fire and hurled pipe bombs at members of Task Force Ranger Regiment 45 while they were on duty at the Buketa Sami checkpoint on Wednesday evening.
No group has claimed responsibility for the assault, and authorities said no arrests have been made. The army paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, describing their service and sacrifice as worthy of the nation's highest respect.
The attack came just one day after a car bomb exploded outside the former Tanyong police station in Narathiwat, injuring a police officer and damaging the building. Police are searching for two suspects who reportedly fled the scene on a motorcycle.
Narathiwat, along with Pattani and Yala provinces, has experienced a long-running separatist insurgency since 2004. The conflict has claimed more than 7,000 lives, including civilians, security personnel, and insurgents.
The latest violence comes despite plans for renewed peace talks between the Thai government and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), the main separatist group, aimed at ending the decades-long conflict.
