The protest followed a heated dispute over the reappointment of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. France had criticized the United States for opposing Türk's second term, accusing Washington of abandoning its traditional leadership on human rights.
US Ambassador Mike Waltz defended his country's position, arguing that Türk had unfairly criticized democratic nations while failing to hold authoritarian governments sufficiently accountable.
Following the walkout, US representative Dan Negrea said the American delegation would continue leaving meetings involving France until Paris withdrew what he described as "condescending and disrespectful" remarks toward the United States.
France's UN Ambassador, Jérôme Bonnafont, did not address the protest during his speech, instead emphasizing France's commitment to protecting the independence and effectiveness of the United Nations.
Türk was reappointed after receiving overwhelming support from the UN General Assembly, despite opposition from the United States and a small group of other countries.
The latest diplomatic clash adds to growing disagreements between Washington and Paris over NATO spending, trade policies, US foreign policy, and recent international conflicts, highlighting increasing strains in relations between the longtime allies.
