Armed hoodlums attacked the female hostel at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Gubi Campus in Bauchi, during the early hours of Monday, making away with dozens of mobile phones and other valuables.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers, armed with machetes, knives, and other dangerous weapons, stormed the hostel around 2:00 a.m. They reportedly forced their way into more than 10 rooms, terrorized students, and stole over 50 mobile phones along with other personal belongings.
Some students were injured during the attack. One victim reportedly sustained serious injuries after resisting the robbers' demand to surrender her phone.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns over security at the Gubi campus, which is located near surrounding villages and dense bushland.
ATBU's Director of Information and Public Relations, Zailani Bappa, confirmed the attack, stating that Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibrahim Hassan Garba visited the affected students to express sympathy and reassure them of the university's commitment to their safety.
He added that the university has strengthened collaboration with security agencies. The case has been reported to the police, who have deployed personnel to the campus, taken statements from victims, and launched an investigation.
The attack has generated widespread reactions among students and on social media, with many calling for improved security measures, the arrest of the perpetrators, and compensation for students who lost their belongings.
