Bryan Kohberger, the man serving four consecutive life sentences for the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students, has asked a court to allow him to withdraw his guilty plea and proceed to trial.
In a handwritten petition filed from the Idaho Maximum Security Penitentiary, the 31-year-old claimed his lawyers pressured him into accepting the plea deal by making false promises about prison conditions and exaggerating what life on death row would be like.
Kohberger alleged that his attorneys failed to properly review key evidence, including what he described as an "unknown hair" found in one victim's hand, and insisted that he could plead guilty despite maintaining his innocence.
He also claimed they promised him improved prison privileges, including contact visits, greater freedom of movement, and employment opportunities, which he now says were never guaranteed.
However, court records show that during his July 2025 plea hearing, Kohberger told the judge he was pleading guilty voluntarily because he was responsible for the killings and confirmed that no one had forced or coerced him into accepting the agreement.
Kohberger is serving four life sentences without the possibility of parole for the fatal stabbing of four University of Idaho students in Moscow, Idaho, a case that shocked the United States and drew international attention. The court will now determine whether there are legal grounds to allow him to withdraw his guilty plea.
