The United Nations has warned that Sudan's city of El-Obeid is facing a looming human rights catastrophe as fears grow over an imminent assault by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Speaking at an emergency session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Friday, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk urged world leaders to take immediate action to prevent further atrocities.
Türk said the warning was a "red alert," stressing that civilians in El-Obeid have endured nearly 18 months of siege-like conditions, with repeated drone attacks and ongoing fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF.
El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, is a strategic city linking RSF-controlled areas in Darfur with army-held eastern Sudan. It is home to about 500,000 residents and nearly 100,000 people displaced by the country's civil war.
According to the UN human rights office, at least 45 people were killed and 41 others injured in 15 drone attacks carried out between June 6 and June 28. The strikes have damaged power stations and fuel depots, leaving many neighbourhoods without electricity and disrupting water supplies.
The conflict in Sudan began in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the RSF, triggering one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. European countries have proposed a draft resolution at the UN Human Rights Council calling for urgent international action to address the worsening situation in El-Obeid.
