Thousands of mourners gathered in Syria's capital, Damascus, on Friday to bury the victims of a deadly café bombing that killed 10 people, including six lawyers, near the Palace of Justice.
The explosion, which occurred on Thursday at Al-Mushairiya Café in the al-Hijaz district, also injured 22 others. The café was a popular meeting place for lawyers, court workers, and visitors due to its proximity to the courthouse.
The Syrian Bar Association confirmed that six of its members were among those killed, describing them as lawyers who died while carrying out their professional duties. Local reports identified the victims as Muhannad Khalaf, Zuhair Askar, Hossam al-Safadi, Mahmoud al-Shamali, Muhammad Ali al-Shihab, and Eid Muhammad Awad.
Authorities said an explosive device had been planted inside the café before it was detonated. Officials ruled out claims that the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber and pledged to bring those responsible to justice. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The bombing has sparked widespread condemnation from countries including Türkiye, Iraq, Egypt, Qatar, and Jordan, as well as the European Union, all of which expressed solidarity with Syria and denounced the attack as an act of terrorism.
The incident is one of the deadliest security breaches in Damascus since Syria's new government took office following the fall of the previous administration in December 2024.
