Ukraine Drone Strike Hits Russia's 'Amazon' Warehouse, Injures Three

A Ukrainian drone attack struck a warehouse belonging to Russia's largest online retailer, Wildberries, near Saint Petersburg early Friday, sparking a major fire and injuring three people, Russian officials said.

The warehouse, owned by Wildberries—often described as Russia's equivalent of Amazon—was engulfed in flames after the strike. Thick smoke was seen rising over parts of Saint Petersburg, located more than 800 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.

Leningrad Region Governor Alexander Drozdenko said three people were wounded in the attack. He also reported that Russian air defence systems intercepted 59 Ukrainian drones overnight.

The strike marks the third attack on Wildberries facilities within a week. Last weekend, another logistics hub outside Moscow was hit, killing eight workers and destroying the site.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously claimed that the targeted facilities were being used to store and distribute sanctioned components for drone production and navigation equipment. Kyiv describes its campaign of long-range drone strikes as retaliation against Russia's continued missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities.

The attack also temporarily disrupted operations at Saint Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport, with around 50 flights affected before services resumed later in the morning.

Russia and Ukraine have intensified long-range strikes in recent months as diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled. The conflict, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, has resulted in hundreds of thousands of military casualties and tens of thousands of civilian deaths, according to international estimates.
