Two moderate earthquakes struck northwestern China's Qinghai Province within 18 minutes of each other on Tuesday, prompting emergency authorities to respond to the affected area.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake measured magnitude 5.7 and occurred at 11:16 a.m. local time. A second, slightly stronger magnitude 5.8 earthquake followed at 11:34 a.m. Both quakes struck at a depth of about 10 kilometers in Xinghai County, a remote and sparsely populated area approximately 244 kilometers from Qinghai's capital, Xining.
State media reported that tremors were felt in Xining and neighboring Gansu Province, including the city of Lanzhou. Videos shared online showed dust rising from rocky hillsides and light fixtures swaying inside buildings.
Chinese authorities said emergency response teams have been dispatched to the epicenter. As of the latest reports, there were no immediate reports of deaths, injuries, or major structural damage, and public order remains stable.
Qinghai is located in a seismically active region of China and experiences earthquakes regularly due to its geological setting.
The latest quakes come just weeks after a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Yunnan Province in southwestern China, temporarily disrupting railway services while safety inspections were carried out.
