Nigerians seeking opportunities to study abroad will have access to several prestigious international scholarship programmes opening from August 2026 through the end of the year.
Among the major opportunities are the Chevening Scholarships in the United Kingdom, the Open Doors Russian Scholarship Project, and the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Programme at Stanford University in the United States. Another notable opportunity, the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship, closes earlier on July 31, 2026.
Chevening Scholarships (United Kingdom)
Applications for the UK government's flagship Chevening Scholarship will open on August 4, 2026, and close on October 6, 2026.
The fully funded programme covers tuition fees, monthly living expenses, return airfare, visa fees, and other allowances. Applicants must be Nigerian citizens with an undergraduate degree, at least two years of work experience (approximately 2,800 hours), leadership potential, and a commitment to return to Nigeria for at least two years after completing their studies.
Successful applicants will begin their one-year master's programmes in the UK in September or October 2027.
Open Doors Russian Scholarship Project
The Open Doors Russian Scholarship Project, organized by the Global Universities Association, will accept applications from August 20 to November 13, 2026.
The programme offers tuition-free admission to participating Russian universities across undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels. It is open to international students, including Nigerians, and applications are submitted entirely online.
Available fields include Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Engineering, Medicine, Biotechnology, Business, Economics, Politics, Education, Chemistry, Urban Planning, and several others.
Knight-Hennessy Scholars (Stanford University)
Applications are also open for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Programme at Stanford University in the United States.
The scholarship provides full funding for graduate studies across Stanford's academic schools. Applicants must submit separate applications to both the Knight-Hennessy programme and their chosen Stanford graduate programme.
The application deadline is October 6, 2026, while graduate programme applications must meet Stanford's individual deadlines.
Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship
Eligible Nigerian professionals also have a final opportunity to apply for the 2027–2028 Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Programme, funded by the U.S. Department of State.
Applications close on July 31, 2026. The 10-month fellowship supports experienced professionals with airfare, tuition, living expenses, books, professional development, and health insurance.
Applicants must possess a university degree, at least five years of professional experience, leadership experience, and eligibility for a Nigerian passport.
