Two Dead, Three Injured as Students’ Hostel Collapses in Anambra

At least two people have been confirmed dead, while three others were rescued with injuries after a three-storey building collapsed in Oko Community, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The building, which served as an off-campus hostel for students of the Federal Polytechnic Oko as well as other residents, collapsed on Monday. Rescue officials said search operations would continue to ensure no one remained trapped beneath the rubble.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Ndidi Omega, confirmed the casualties, adding that the injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment.

Following the incident, the Anambra State Government sealed off the collapsed building and launched a manhunt for its owner and manager.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu, said preliminary investigations indicated signs of structural failure that were allegedly ignored. He accused the building owner of prioritizing financial gain over the safety of occupants.

The commissioner also announced that integrity tests would be carried out on other buildings in the area to prevent similar tragedies. He added that the premises would remain sealed until investigations are completed and promised that the government would soon announce further actions regarding the incident.
