Turkish authorities have detained another opposition district mayor in Istanbul along with five other individuals as part of an expanding investigation into alleged corruption involving building and occupancy permits.
According to local broadcaster NTV, those detained include Uskudar Mayor Sinem Dedetas, the district's deputy mayor, a municipal secretary, an architect, a business representative, and a contractor.
Police reportedly carried out simultaneous raids at 11 locations across Istanbul, seizing digital devices and other materials as part of the investigation.
Authorities allege that the municipality approved construction permits through a system that required contractors to sign consultancy agreements before receiving official approval.
The latest arrests are part of a broader legal crackdown targeting municipalities controlled by Turkey's main opposition party. Since 2024, numerous opposition officials have faced investigations and detentions.
Opposition leaders have strongly rejected the allegations, describing the investigations as politically motivated efforts to weaken their party. The Turkish government, however, insists that the country's judiciary operates independently and that the legal actions are based solely on evidence.
The case has intensified political tensions in Turkey, where critics have accused the government of increasing pressure on opposition figures, while officials maintain that no one is above the law.
