The Northern Senators Forum has condemned the recent deadly attacks in Benue and Kaduna states, describing the killings as tragic and urging security agencies to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the forum's Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Yar'Adua, the lawmakers expressed condolences to the families of the victims and pledged solidarity with the affected communities.
The forum also welcomed the Federal Government's decision to strengthen national security by expanding the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions and recruiting 28,000 additional personnel. According to the senators, the move will improve military coverage, enhance border security, and boost the country's ability to respond swiftly to security threats.
The lawmakers, however, stressed that the expansion must be supported with adequate weapons, logistics, and improved welfare for military personnel to ensure its success.
The statement followed separate attacks in Benue and Kaduna states that claimed dozens of lives. In Benue, gunmen reportedly killed 13 people in Efeyi Community, Otukpo Local Government Area, while about 30 people, including women and children, were reportedly killed in an attack on Naridon Village in Kaduna State.
The forum called on residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible intelligence to help prevent further attacks. It also urged the Federal Government to swiftly arrest and prosecute the perpetrators while providing relief and support to victims and displaced persons.
The senators maintained that lasting peace can only be achieved through coordinated security operations, improved intelligence gathering, and sustained investment in Nigeria's security architecture.
