United States President Donald Trump has threatened the European Union with steep tariffs and a possible new trade investigation after Brussels imposed a $1 billion antitrust fine on Google.
Trump criticized the EU's decision, describing the penalties against Google and other American technology companies as unfair and discriminatory. In a social media post, he warned that the EU would "pay a very big price" for targeting U.S. firms.
The European Commission fined Google for violating the Digital Markets Act, accusing the company of giving preferential treatment to its own services in search results and restricting app developers from directing users to alternative payment options outside the Google Play Store.
EU regulators have given Google 60 days to comply with the ruling or face additional penalties of up to 5 percent of its average daily global revenue.
Google rejected the decision, arguing that the ruling would harm its products and negatively affect users.
The latest fine has renewed tensions between Washington and Brussels despite recent efforts to ease trade disputes. U.S. officials have warned that the EU's actions against American tech companies could strain trade relations further, while EU leaders insist they are simply enforcing their competition laws fairly.
