The head of the Hamas-run police force in northern Gaza, Brigadier-General Abdel-Nasser Al-Maqadma, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Saturday, according to Gaza's Interior Ministry. The strike targeted the Sheikh Radwan area of Gaza City, where Al-Maqadma also served as the governor of northern Gaza.
The Israeli military said Al-Maqadma was also affiliated with Hamas' military wing, describing him as a legitimate target.
The attacks also claimed the lives of five other Palestinians. Among them were a medic killed in the Nuseirat refugee camp, two people who died in a strike on a house in Khan Younis, a high school graduate identified as Khaled Al-Breim, and a police officer who died from injuries sustained in an earlier Israeli attack.
Israeli authorities said the strike on the house in Khan Younis was aimed at a member of the Islamic Jihad group.
In recent months, Israel has intensified strikes against members of the Hamas-led police force, alleging that many have links to Hamas' armed wing. Hamas, however, accuses Israel of deliberately targeting its police personnel to weaken civil administration in Gaza and says the attacks violate the ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States.
According to Gaza health officials, more than 1,180 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire was agreed in October. Israeli authorities say four Israeli soldiers have been killed in Gaza during the same period.
