US President Donald Trump has authorized the resumption of direct commercial flights between the United States and Lebanon, ending a suspension that has been in place for more than three decades.
The announcement came on Tuesday following Trump's meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at the White House. In a statement shared on social media, Trump praised Aoun's efforts to rebuild Lebanon and said his administration would allow US airlines to operate direct flights to the country.
Direct air travel between the two nations has been suspended since 1985, when the United States halted operations involving Lebanon's national carrier after a series of aircraft hijackings linked to Hezbollah militants.
President Aoun, the first Lebanese head of state to visit the White House since 2009, held talks with Trump focused on strengthening bilateral ties and addressing regional security issues, including the conflict along the Israel-Lebanon border.
Following the meeting, US officials described the discussions as productive, saying both leaders expressed a commitment to improving relations and supporting Lebanon's stability.
The move is expected to make travel easier for thousands of Lebanese-Americans and other US travelers while signaling a new chapter in US-Lebanon relations.
