Nigerian troops under Operation HADIN KAI have repelled an attempted attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in Cross Kauwa community, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Capt. Mohammed Goni, the attack occurred at about 10:20 p.m. on Saturday when insurgents attempted to infiltrate the military position under the cover of darkness.
The troops detected the movement early and engaged the attackers with coordinated firepower, forcing them to retreat after suffering heavy casualties.
During the operation, soldiers recovered a Sony camcorder believed to belong to a suspected terrorist cameraman who was killed in the gun battle. Military authorities said the device contained operational footage and propaganda materials.
Preliminary forensic analysis of the recordings indicated that the failed attack was allegedly coordinated by four senior ISWAP commanders with support from three foreign terrorist facilitators. The foreign operatives were identified as a Palestinian known as Abu Ishaq, described as an ISWAP trainer; a Moroccan identified as Abu Thaiba, reportedly serving as the group's medical doctor; and another unidentified Arab operative.
The military also recovered terrorist uniforms, PKT ammunition, 7.62mm special rounds, and other items abandoned during the retreat.
Officials said intelligence reports suggested the insurgents may have targeted cholera medical supplies, amid indications of a cholera outbreak within terrorist camps. The military also claimed that some infected insurgents had previously been executed by the group.
Satellite imagery and human intelligence reportedly showed that the terrorists evacuated several bodies of those killed in the clash, while others escaped with gunshot wounds.
Two Nigerian soldiers sustained injuries during the exchange of fire and were airlifted for advanced medical treatment. They are reported to be in stable condition.
Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining offensive operations against terrorist groups and protecting communities across Nigeria's North-East.
