Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has disclosed that his government is working toward a security agreement with Israel with the support of several international partners, describing the effort as a possible first step toward broader regional peace.
In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, al-Sharaa said Syria is seeking to avoid further military confrontations with Israel while protecting its legitimate rights, including its claim to the occupied Golan Heights.
The Syrian leader noted that a security arrangement could help reduce tensions and create an opportunity for a more comprehensive political settlement after years of conflict between the two countries.
Addressing regional issues, al-Sharaa denied reports that Syria plans to intervene militarily in neighboring Lebanon. Instead, he said Damascus is focused on supporting Lebanese authorities as they work to address the country's ongoing political and security challenges. He also stressed that decisions on war and peace in Lebanon should remain solely under the authority of the Lebanese state.
On domestic affairs, al-Sharaa argued that lifting international sanctions alone would not be enough to revive Syria's economy unless the country is also removed from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
He acknowledged delays in implementing an agreement with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) but reaffirmed his government's commitment to completing the process.
The president also announced the establishment of a special committee to investigate the fate of people who went missing during Syria's civil war. He said the body will work in accordance with international standards and cooperate with countries that have expertise in locating and identifying missing persons.
