A survivor of the May 15, 2026 abduction in Oriire Local Government Area has shared details of the 56 days he and other victims spent in captivity, describing harsh conditions and strict rules imposed by their kidnappers.
Speaking to journalists in Ogbomoso, Zacheaus Olatunde said the abductors observed daily Islamic prayers and frequently recited the Qur'an. He claimed they also forbade Christian captives from praying or mentioning the name of Jesus, warning that anyone who disobeyed would face severe punishment.
Olatunde said two fellow captives, Michael Oyedokun and Deacon John Olaleye, were killed during the ordeal. According to him, Oyedokun was accused of hiding a mobile phone after the kidnappers had ordered all captives to surrender their devices. He alleged that the group's leader ordered Oyedokun's execution, and the remaining hostages later heard his cries before they suddenly stopped.
He added that Olaleye was later taken away and killed after the kidnappers accused security forces of moving too close to their camp despite previous warnings.
The survivor said the captives were held in tents with their hands handcuffed, legs chained, and eyes blindfolded for most of their time in the forest. They reportedly needed permission to carry out basic daily activities and were frequently moved from one location to another.
According to Olatunde, adult male captives were often beaten with gun butts, sometimes for actions attributed to children in the group.
He further claimed the kidnappers initially said they were not interested in collecting ransom but instead wanted some of their arrested members released by security agencies.
Olatunde said the kidnappers' attitude changed after learning that some of their own relatives had been arrested by soldiers. On the day the hostages were released, he said the abductors even asked them to bathe before leaving the camp, but the captives declined because they were eager to return home.
After reaching Ibadan, Olatunde said military authorities showed him photographs of suspected kidnappers, and he identified one of the men he said had guarded them during their captivity.
Authorities have continued investigations into the abduction, while security agencies are working to apprehend those responsible.
