India has officially launched its first domestically built hydrogen-powered train, marking a major milestone in the country's transition to cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new train, named NaMo Green Rail, on Friday in Haryana, describing the project as a significant achievement in India's journey toward self-reliance and environmental sustainability.
The hydrogen-powered train will operate two daily return trips on a 90-kilometre route between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. The 10-coach train can accommodate approximately 2,600 passengers and has a top speed of 75 kilometres per hour.
Unlike diesel-powered trains, the hydrogen train emits only water vapour and heat, making it a zero-emission alternative that supports India's efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
Although nearly all of India's 70,000-kilometre railway network has already been electrified, hydrogen-powered trains are expected to serve routes where electrification is difficult or uneconomical.
With this launch, India joins countries such as Germany, Japan, China, and the United States in operating hydrogen-powered trains.
The project forms part of the Indian government's broader clean energy strategy, which aims to make the country's railway network net-zero in carbon emissions by 2030. It also complements India's ongoing investments in renewable energy and other low-carbon technologies.
The introduction of NaMo Green Rail represents another important step in India's commitment to building a greener and more sustainable transport system.
