A gas-laden truck exploded on Tuesday night at an Army checkpoint along the Abuja–Lokoja Federal Highway in Kogi State, killing at least six people and destroying several vehicles.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck, which was transporting gas cylinders, burst into flames as it approached the checkpoint, triggering a massive explosion that spread to nearby trucks.
The driver of the gas truck and his assistant died in the blaze, while three other truck drivers and their assistants were also killed after their vehicles caught fire. In total, six people lost their lives in the incident.
The affected trucks, bearing registration numbers from Jigawa State, Lagos State, and the Federal Capital Territory, were completely destroyed.
Emergency responders, including police officers, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials, and Motor Traffic Division personnel, arrived at the scene to contain the fire and manage traffic.
The bodies of the victims were evacuated to the General Hospital in Abaji, while the burnt vehicles were removed to restore the free flow of traffic on the highway.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kogi State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident.
