Air Peace Completes Evacuation of 1,393 Nigerians from South Africa

Air Peace has successfully concluded the Federal Government's evacuation operation from South Africa, bringing home the last group of 308 Nigerians and completing the return of 1,393 citizens in five special flights.

The final evacuation flight landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Wednesday aboard a Boeing 777-200 aircraft. Officials of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), led by Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa, welcomed the returnees on behalf of the Federal Government.

Dabiri-Erewa expressed sympathy to the evacuees over the challenges they experienced during the crisis in South Africa and reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu's commitment to supporting their reintegration and welfare. She also praised Air Peace and its Chairman, Dr. Allen Onyema, for partnering with the government to ensure the safe return of stranded Nigerians.

Air Peace said the humanitarian mission demonstrated the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector in protecting Nigerians abroad. The airline noted that the operation further strengthens its record of conducting humanitarian and emergency evacuation missions across Africa and beyond.

According to the airline, each flight not only transported passengers home but also reunited families and restored hope to citizens affected by the crisis.

The evacuation programme was launched following renewed xenophobic attacks and anti-immigrant protests in parts of South Africa, prompting the Nigerian government to offer voluntary repatriation to citizens who wished to return home.
