At least eight people, including a three-year-old child, have been killed after Russia and Ukraine launched fresh attacks deep inside each other's territory, officials from both countries said on Thursday.
According to Ukrainian authorities, Russian strikes killed four people in Ukraine. Three victims died after a drone attack hit a food processing business in Pavlohrad, Dnipropetrovsk region, while another man was killed in a mortar strike in the northeastern Sumy region.
In Russia, officials said Ukrainian drone attacks killed four people, including a three-year-old boy whose home caught fire after a drone crashed in the Voronezh region. Two more people were reported killed in Russian-controlled Crimea, while another man died in the Belgorod region after a drone struck a vehicle.
The latest wave of attacks highlights the growing intensity of long-range strikes by both sides, even as fighting along the front line remains largely unchanged.
Meanwhile, Russia's Ministry of Defence claimed its forces had captured the village of Bilytske near Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian military officials said their troops had repelled dozens of Russian assaults in the area but did not confirm the reported capture.
Separately, European Union ambassadors approved a new round of sanctions against Russia targeting more than 200 individuals and organisations, over 100 banks, cryptocurrency operators, vessels linked to Russia's "shadow fleet," and several military-industrial companies. The package also includes a temporary exemption for LNG transfers to third countries and maintains a reduced price cap on Russian oil.
The war, now in its fifth year, continues to claim civilian lives as both Russia and Ukraine intensify cross-border attacks.
