Five Thai soldiers have been killed in a coordinated bomb and gun attack on a military checkpoint in Thailand's insurgency-hit southern region, marking one of the deadliest assaults in recent years.
The attack occurred on Tuesday evening in Narathiwat province, where heavily armed assailants opened fire on soldiers stationed at the Bukeh Sami checkpoint before hurling pipe bombs. According to the Thai Army, all five members of Task Force Ranger Regiment 45 died in the attack.
Six civilians, including a 10-year-old boy, were also injured in the crossfire and blast. Authorities said the victims were taken to hospital for treatment.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul condemned the incident, describing it as a "brazen act of terrorism" that threatens Thailand's national security and undermines ongoing peace efforts in the country's troubled southern provinces.
Security footage reportedly showed several suspects arriving in a black pickup truck and on motorcycles before launching the attack. No group has claimed responsibility, and police have yet to make any arrests.
The violence came just a day after another explosion targeted a police station in Narathiwat, causing minor injuries and property damage.
Thailand's southern provinces of Narathiwat, Yala, and Pattani have experienced a separatist insurgency since 2004, with more than 7,000 people killed in the conflict. The government has held several rounds of peace talks with the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) rebel group, but attacks continue to occur.
The Thai military paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, saying their courage and sacrifice would be remembered, while opposition leaders urged the government to take stronger measures to restore peace and protect civilians.
