Russian Overnight Missile, Drone Attack on Kyiv Kills 13, Injures Dozens

At least 13 people have been killed and 86 others injured after Russia launched a massive overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv.

The assault, which began late Wednesday and continued into the early hours of Thursday, damaged residential buildings across the city, forcing residents to seek shelter in metro stations and basements.

Ukrainian authorities said Russia fired 496 drones and 74 missiles, including ballistic missiles. The Ukrainian Air Force claimed it intercepted 476 drones and 48 missiles, but several projectiles struck residential areas, causing widespread destruction.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the death toll and said emergency crews were working to rescue victims trapped under the rubble.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier warned that Russia was preparing a large-scale attack, urging citizens to follow air raid alerts and use bomb shelters. Following the strike, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha called on Ukraine's allies to urgently provide more air defence systems.

Russia's Defence Ministry acknowledged carrying out what it described as a "massive strike" on Kyiv, saying it was in retaliation for recent Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory.

The latest bombardment comes as diplomatic efforts to end the more than four-year war remain stalled, with both sides continuing to exchange long-range attacks.
