The Rivers State Police Command has debunked a viral social media post claiming that four women posing as market traders were arrested for kidnapping in Port Harcourt, saying the photograph accompanying the claim was generated using artificial intelligence (AI).
According to the police, the viral image and audio message are false and do not reflect any incident reported anywhere in Rivers State.
Police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko Agabe, said the command immediately launched a verification process by contacting divisional police officers and other police formations across the state. She confirmed that no such kidnapping attempt or arrest had been recorded.
A preliminary digital analysis of the circulated photograph also revealed clear signs that it was AI-generated and should not be regarded as genuine evidence.
The command has opened an investigation to identify those responsible for creating and spreading the false content, warning that anyone found culpable could face prosecution under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.
The police urged residents to avoid sharing unverified information, manipulated images, or AI-generated content capable of causing panic and public disorder. They also encouraged members of the public to rely on official channels for security information and report any credible concerns to the appropriate authorities.
The Rivers State Police Command reassured residents that the state remains peaceful and secure, reaffirming its commitment to intelligence-led policing and the protection of lives and property.
