The Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a teacher accused of fatally flogging a 12-year-old student at a school in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area of the state.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the search is being coordinated under the command's Safe School Initiative, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, ACP Harrison Oruruo.
Ikenga said the police received a report of the incident on the evening of July 16, 2026. Officers from the Neni Division responded immediately and rushed the pupil to a hospital, where doctors later confirmed him dead while receiving treatment.
The victim's body has been deposited in the morgue for preservation and an autopsy. Police said preliminary observations revealed visible marks of violence on different parts of the boy's body.
The command described the incident as tragic and assured the victim's family and the public that a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation is underway. Authorities said anyone found responsible would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The police also appealed to members of the public with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the fleeing teacher to report to the nearest police station or contact the Anambra State Police Command through its emergency line.
