The Taraba State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old student for allegedly possessing an illegal firearm in Jalingo, the state capital.
The suspect, identified as Usman A. Usman, is a student of the Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau Institute for Quranic Memorization and hails from Sansani in Gassol Local Government Area. Police said he was found with a mini revolver pistol without ammunition, which he allegedly intended to use to intimidate fellow students after a dispute.
According to the command's spokesperson, ASP Victor Mshelizah, the incident followed a report from the school's management regarding a disagreement between two students. During questioning, the suspect reportedly confessed that another student, Akilu Alhassan, who is currently on the run, supplied him with the firearm.
The police said efforts are underway to arrest the fleeing suspect and anyone else connected to the case.
Commissioner of Police Morkwap Sebastian Dongshal has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation to determine the source of the weapon and whether a wider criminal network is involved.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to combating cultism, illegal firearms, and other criminal activities, while urging members of the public to report suspicious movements and activities to security agencies.
