UNICEF, Jigawa Renew Partnership to Combat Child Poverty

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Jigawa State Government have reaffirmed their commitment to reducing child poverty through stronger collaboration aimed at improving healthcare, education, nutrition, and child protection across the state.

The renewed commitment was announced during a courtesy visit by the newly appointed Chief of UNICEF's Kano Field Office, Shafeeq Ur-Rehman, to Governor Umar Namadi at the Government House in Dutse.

Ur-Rehman, who oversees UNICEF operations in Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina states, praised Jigawa for its sustained investments in child welfare, describing the state as a model for human development.

He commended the government's efforts in strengthening healthcare, education, nutrition, child protection, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and other initiatives that support children and vulnerable families.

Governor Namadi welcomed the UNICEF delegation and expressed confidence that the new leadership would further strengthen the long-standing partnership between the organization and Jigawa State.

He noted that the collaboration has delivered significant progress in key sectors, particularly through nutrition programmes such as the Masaki Nutrition Programme, which has helped combat child malnutrition and improve maternal and child health.

The governor also highlighted Jigawa's achievements in sanitation, including its progress toward becoming one of Nigeria's leading Open Defecation Free (ODF) states.

Namadi reaffirmed his administration's commitment to expanding social programmes and working closely with UNICEF to ensure better healthcare, education, protection, and opportunities for every child in Jigawa State.
