The outgoing British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, has praised President Bola Tinubu's economic reforms, saying they are laying the foundation for a stronger and more sustainable economy despite the short-term challenges faced by many Nigerians.
Montgomery made the remarks during a farewell visit to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) headquarters in Abuja. He acknowledged that policies such as currency devaluation and rising inflation have placed pressure on citizens but stressed that the reforms are necessary for long-term economic recovery and growth.
He also commended Nigeria's economic management team, particularly the Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, for their efforts in improving fiscal management and implementing key reforms aimed at strengthening the country's economy.
The British envoy described the NRS as one of the British High Commission's strongest partners and praised the agency's commitment to reform. He added that he would continue to brief the United Kingdom's new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, on Nigeria's economic progress.
Responding, Dr. Adedeji thanked Montgomery for his support throughout his tenure, noting that the envoy's personal commitment and technical assistance contributed significantly to the success of Nigeria's ongoing economic reforms. He wished Montgomery success in his future assignments while expressing appreciation for the strong partnership between both countries.
